"The Bucketfilling assembly correlates perfectly with our district character clusters and our schools' anti-bullying policy.  It was also a great program for our 'March is Reading Month'  celebration."  Vickie Tisdale, Principal, Windemere View Elementary, Lansing, MI

During the first week of the 2006-2007 school year, Mr. Paul LePlae, Principal at Orchard Hills Elementary School in Novi, Michigan, read the book, Have You Filled a Bucket Today in every classroom.  His staff added a reminder to fill a bucket that day for the morning announcements.  The children have been filling his bucket ever since.  What better testimony is there!

TEACHERS AND COUNSELORS EMBRACE IT!!!

"A child's self-esteem can really be hurt by bullies at this age.  This program addresses those problems.  It's giving them a positive outlet and reason to stop teasing if they are doing that."  Roselie Ruebelman, Counselor, Susick Elementary, Troy,MI

____________

"I read and discussed your book in my middle school classroom.  It brought down walls.  I asked my students to consider, "Are you a bucket filler or a bucket dipper?  What about your friends?  They got it."  Pam Carls, Middle School Teacher, Battle Creek, MI

___________

"Thanks for a great assembly.  It was concrete, meaningful, easy to understand, and follow through."  Leatha Cudworth, Kindergarten teacher, Argentine Elementary, Linden, MI

____________

"I am a child clinical psychologist.  I love your book!  The bucket is a great way to conceptualize self-esteem and feelings of self-worth. I always tell the child that the bully is attempting to build their self-esteem at the expense of the victim.  The bucket concept really illustrates that."  Karen Quick, Ph.D. North Merrick, NY

____________

"Bucketfilling is just contagious.  Children love it!"  Eileen Schmidt, Counselor, Our Lady of Good Counsel Elementary, Plymouth, MI

____________

"I mentor teachers with one to three years experience.  I use your book in classes which are "behavior challenged"  and encourage new teachers to use the "bucketfilling" technique as a way to promote a positive environment in their classes.  Teachers tell me they have noticed a real change in their students' attitudes and actions.  It puts a smile on my face when I hear, "Mrs. DeGrandis, I filled a bucket today!"  Sarah DeGrandis, Teacher, Cleveland, OH

____________

"What a difference our school has made with just one little concept!"  Shawna Boomgaard, Teacher, Grayson Elementary, Waterford, MI

"My eight-year-old son has not stopped talking about your assembly.  He has never been so helpful and he loves filling buckets."  Diane, a Parent, Farmington, MI

"What a wonderful message to pass on to children, teachers and parents.  With all the negative messages, violence, and competition to be better/more powerful/bigger etc. etc., it is nice to have a message about love, sharing, caring and being good individuals."  Nalini, Parent, Oak, Park,  MI

____________

"I love your book and so do my sons.  They are 5 and 10-years old.  We've read and talked about the message in your book several times.  Every night we read a story, say our prayers and talk about the buckets we filled that day.  My heart is so touched. My 5-year-old has learned to share.  My 10-year-old is always doing kind things for others."   Kristie, a Parent, Hartland, MI.

"The senseless teasing in our house has almost been eliminated with the simple reminder ... 'Hey, you're dipping in my bucket!' Thanks for bringing your message to my children's school."  Mark, a Parent, Rochester.

A note from Author Carol McCloud:

When the 'Bucket' book was first published in June 2006, my husband, Mike, became ill.  He passed away twelve weeks later and my bucket was emptied.  Friends and family filled it with love, support and encouragement.  Bucket filling is real.  It helps so much.

Two months later, I received a surprise package and letter from Maureen Nichols, a fourth-grade teacher at Thornton Creek Elementary in Northville, MI.   I had never met Maureen.  She wrote that she began her school year with the 'Bucket' book and her students loved the concept.  She had heard of my husband's death and when she told her children, they felt compelled to write and 'fill my bucket.'  They did.

Maureen's  envelope contained a folder with 31 of the most sensitive letters, drawings, poems, and stories I have ever received.  Every time I stop and read their individual notes, it fills my bucket.  I smile.  I laugh.  I cry.  The common thread was:

"I am sorry for your loss.

I hope this letter fills your bucket. "

It did!  Every one of these children is a bucket filler.

They got it!!

WORDS

by Glenny Merillat, Plymouth, MI

It's easy to be kind when your life seems more like play

We gladly find the special words to brighten someone's day.

But, if we're sad or angry and life doesn't seem worthwhile

Unkind words can slip right out and take away a smile.

Bucketfillers always try to watch what they say

They want to fill buckets with loving kindness every day.

And when they do, they find that life looks bright once more

Because what you give comes back to you like waves upon the shore.
